Simon Tavaré, FRS FMedSci

Principal Investigator

Dr. Simon Tavaré was affiliated with the University of Southern California (USC) from 1989 to 2018. From 1998 - 2014, he held the George and Louise Kawamoto Chair in Biological Sciences and was an adjunct Research Professor in Molecular and Computational Biology from 2014 to 2018. From September 2009 to August 2015, he was  PI of the USC NIH Center of Excellence in Genomic Science, focusing on a Genomic approach to the genotype-phenotype map. In 2018, he was appointed Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences.

Dr. Tavaré was a Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge from 2003 to 2019. He was Director of its MPhil in Computational and Systems Biology (2004-2014) and Director of its Wellcome Trust 4-year Ph.D. program in Mathematical Genomics and Medicine (2010-2017). From November 2015 to November 2017, he was President of the London Mathematical Society. His research in DAMTP focused on stochastic computation methods such as MCMC without likelihoods and approximate Bayesian computation; on theoretical population genetics, including inference for coalescent processes; statistical genetics; stochastic models for cancer evolution; and probabilistic combinatorics.

Dr. Tavaré was Professor of Cancer Research (Bioinformatics) in the Department of Oncology from 2003 to 2019 and a Senior Group Leader in the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute from 2006 to 2019. He was director of the Institute from February 2013 to February 2018. His research in the CI focused on cancer genomics, primarily the statistical analysis of sequencing and related technologies, and the development of statistical and stochastic methods arising in evolutionary approaches to cancer. He retired from the University in 2019 and is now a Director of Research in the CI.

Dr. Tavaré joined Columbia University in 2018 as the founding director of the Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics (IICD) and a professor in the Departments of Statistics and Biological Sciences.
