In July 2018, Dr. Tavaré joined Columbia University in the City of New York as Herbert and Florence Irving Director of the Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics (IICD) and a professor in the Departments of Statistics and Biological Sciences. A major theme of his research is computational cancer genomics, including statistical and stochastic methods for understanding tumor heterogeneity and cancer evolution. His lab is also part of the IMAXT CRUK Grand Challenge consortium, developing methods to study solid tumors in 3.5D.

Dr. Tavaré is a member of the Data Science Institute and its Data & Society Council, a member of the Program for Mathematical Genomics, a Full Member of the Cancer Genomics and Epigenomics Program in the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, and a Senior Associate Core Member of the New York Genome Center.
